The Confederation of Rightholders’ Societies of Europe and Asia (CRSEA) and the Public Association of Copyright and Related Rights Holders of Uzbekistan have agreed to jointly develop the intellectual property sphere in Uzbekistan. The signing of the Memorandum took place on June 13 in Tashkent (Republic of Uzbekistan).

The document provides for cooperation on the mutual representation of the rights and interests of the copyright holders of the CRSEA member states in Uzbekistan and the copyright holders of the Public Association of Copyright and Related Rights Holders of Uzbekistan in the CRSEA member states. In addition, in accordance with the Memorandum, the parties will work out a road map on the entry of Uzbekistan into the CRSEA.

As the CRSEA Secretary General Andrei Krichevsky stated, “the signing of the Memorandum of Cooperation with our Uzbekistan colleagues is an important step towards improving the system of protection of intellectual rights in the Eurasian territory. Uzbekistan has taken a confident course towards the development of the sphere of intellectual property: literally in February of this year, the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan signed a number of laws on accession of Uzbekistan to international obligations for the protection of intellectual property. I’m sure that the joint steps of the CRSEA and the Public Association of Copyright and Related Rights Holders of Uzbekistan, stipulated by the Memorandum, will allow Eurasian authors and copyright holders to manage their intellectual capital as efficiently as possible, to monetize their creativity.”

According to Lola Usmanova, the Chairman of the Board of the Public Association of Copyright and Related Rights Holders of Uzbekistan, “the exchange of experience with colleagues from the largest Eurasian association in the field of collective rights management is very important for Uzbekistan rightholders and authors. It is necessary to ensure the development of an open and transparent intellectual property market in Uzbekistan, to give our authors access to international platforms and organizations. We hope that our cooperation will not only strengthen the mechanisms for protecting copyright in the country, but also open up new opportunities for representatives of creative professions to receive worthy remuneration for their work.”

Within the framework of the Agreement, CRSEA and the Public Association of Copyright and Related Rights Holders of Uzbekistan plan to hold round tables and forums, international seminars, thematic meetings to exchange experiences in the field of collective management of intellectual property rights. Both organizations will carry out joint work on the introduction of services on the collection and distribution of remuneration in the territory of Uzbekistan.

The memorandum also provides for the signing between the Public Association of Copyright and Related Rights Holders of Uzbekistan and Russian intellectual property management societies of an agreement on the distribution and payment of remuneration for public performance, communication to the public by cable or broadcasting the published musical works, phonograms and fragments of musical and dramatic works.
